Day 740
Ceasefire II, Day 6
All she wants is to go back to school.
She lies in her tent, thinking of what it was like:
her best friend at the desk beside hers,
their secrets whispered back and forth.
The teacher scolding them. Then walking home
together: more secrets. More laughter. Plans.
All she wants is the life she had,
the life she didn’t know she’d lose:
homework. Nervousness before a test.
The math she couldn’t understand.
The novel her teacher loaned her,
which she never had time to read
and never returned. Then wished
she had, when she learned her teacher
had been killed. Her best friend killed.
Her school bombed. Burned. The drawing
her teacher promised to give back to her.
The math problem she finally figured out
on the sheet of paper she handed her teacher
at the last minute of the last day of the last
she knew of what she had always known.
