Day 830
Ceasefire III, Day 95
For Dr Refaat Alareer,
assassinated 6 December, 2023
At last they have placed
a headstone
on Refaat’s grave, with lines
from one of his poems:
If I must die
let it bring hope
Let it be a tale
Can his small daughter —
the one who was starting
to love to read — can she
visit her father’s grave with her mother
and tell him about the books
she’s reading, the stories
she’s writing? Has his death
brought her anything but sorrow?
Anger? Unending loss?
It’s a tale. A tale
so many of us are telling now
with Refaat our guide,
our mentor, our inspiration,
our issuer of orders. If I
must die/you must live/
to tell my story.
We are living, Refaat,
to tell your story, yours
and hundreds of thousands
of others. We are living
to make sure the stories
don’t die. The stories, Refaat,
are the ground, the foundation.
The place where rebuilding
begins. Your gravestone, Refaat,
rising from the soft earth
above so many who have
no stones. Whose stories
we can only guess.
