Day 701
The young doctor is so hungry
she collapses while walking
to the hospital. She hasn’t
bothered to count the days
since she’s eaten more
than a little bread, a few
spoonsful of beans. She knows
the children she’s going to treat
have eaten less. A woman
who’s walking by helps her up,
steadies her on her arm. The doctor
stands, leaning against a pile
of rocks. From where she is
she can see the hospital: bombed, broken,
but still taking in patients. Still
doing anything it’s possible
to do. The heat, she says
to the woman still
standing beside her. I think
it’s the heat that got to me. The woman
nods, smiles. Does not
walk away. You took care
of my little boy, she says
quietly. You tried so hard
to keep him alive. Now I
will take care of you. Come,
let me walk you to the hospital.
